Flash Android 5.1.1 Lollipop Update for Galaxy GRAND Prime G531F

The official Android 5.1.1 Lollipop firmware update has been released for all the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime G531F models. Check the instructions listed in this post in order to learn how to manually complete the update without waiting for Samsung to push the update over-the-air.

As you know Samsung is releasing these updates over the air and it does it in stages. This new Lollipop upgrade brings TouchWiz improvements, Material Design UI and tons of extra goodies that should improve the overall Android experience. Check the guidelines below before starting the installation of this new firmware.


Preparation Steps:

Use this tutorial only with the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime SM – G531F devices. Your device’s model number can be verified under Settings> About Phone.

Do not use this article for any other different Samsung device.

Download Samsung USB Drivers for your computer from here. The USB drivers will allow you to connect your phone to PC via usb cable and install the firmware using Odin app. Odin3 is a small tool destined for advanced users that are looking to update their phones manually using the info listed in this post. For Odin to work and run successfully on your device you will need to install the drivers above and for the Samsung KIES to be disabled. KIES will try to block Odin from running on your PC.Enable USB Debugging from Developer Options menu. If Developer Options is not listed under Settings, then you should open About Phone menu and tap 7 times consecutively on the Build Number section. Return to Settings, scroll down and open Developer Options where you will find USB Debugging.You can install the update over rooted firmware, too. But, you need to know that root access will be lost after the update is complete. Also, any custom Recovery that you might have installed is going to be replaced with a stock Recovery image.You can flash the new official Android 5.1.1 firmware over a custom ROM, too. But, note that you will need to factory reset the Galaxy Grand Prime after the flashing process is done.The ‘factory reset’ process will wipe all data from system partition, but it won’t delete any data from internal storage. Also, the factory reset is applied so that your phone will be able to boot in normal mode after the update is done. All ‘factory reset’ steps are listed at the end of this post.Use this tutorial only in case you are an advanced user. We cannot be blamed in case you brick your device nor in case you lose any important data in the process.Read the whole post first and make sure not to skip any steps.Check battery charge level, make sure that it is over 50%, as it will prevent your device from switching off while it boots the new Android 5.1.1 firmware for the first time.


How to update Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime G531F to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop:

Download the Android 5.1.1 G531FXXU1APA1 firmware zip from here.

  • Extract the contents in the zip and save them on your PC.
  • you will get the G531FXXU1APA1 tar.md5 firmware updating file that you will have to flash using Odin.
  • do not extract the tar.md5 archive.
  • Download Odin3 v3.10.6 from here.
  • extract the Odin archived contents and save them on your PC.
  • Power off your smartphone.
  • Now boot it in Download Mode.
  • press and hold Volume Down, Home and Power buttons at the same time.
  • release the buttons when the Warning alert appears on your phone’s screen.

  • Open the Odin3 exe on your computer.
  • Next, connect your phone to PC via usb cable.
  • wait for Odin to add the device.
  • if your smartphone is not detected you will need to re-install the Samsung USB Drivers
  • once again.
  • Go back to Odin and make sure that ‘re-partition’ is disabled under “options” section.
  • – do not edit other default Odin settings.
  • Next, click on Odin’s AP button.
  • Locate the G531FXXU1APA1 tar.md5 firmware file and load it in Odin.
  • Hit the START button when you’re ready to begin the Android 5.1.1 updating process.
  • – do not press any buttons until all the new Lollipop firmware files are done installing.
  • When the update is done you can see the PASS alert shown by Odin.
  • The Galaxy Grand Prime device will proceed to boot in normal mode.
  • Unplug the phone from computer when the ‘optimizing apps’ screen loads on your phone.

  • Use your default Google account in order to regain complete control over your device. These were all the steps that you had to take in order to complete the updating process of your Galaxy Grand Prime to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. In case you’ve encountered any problems during the installation of this new official firmware, then you should check the extra info listed below. NOTE1: In case you get the FAIL alert from Odin, then you will be forced to try and repeat the whole tutorial more than once. If you repeat the installation, then you will have to make sure that you won’t be skipping any steps and that your phone meets all requirements listed above the tutorial. NOTE2: If ODIN shows the PASS alert, but your phone gets stuck at the boot animation or it enters in a boot loop, then you will need to ‘factory reset’ your smartphone. The ‘factory reset’ steps below will need to be applied by those that have installed the Android 5.1.1 official firmware over a custom ROM, too. Here’s how to do it: power off the phone. boot it in Recovery Mode: volume up+ home + power buttons pressed at the same time. select ‘wipe data/ factory reset’. confirm. reboot the Galaxy Grand Prime in normal mode.
